Daniel Lahey commented on jkn's blog post Happy Birthday, Steve Roach! From your friends at Relaxed Machinery!
"Steve Roach is to ambient music as Bach is to, well, music. Any music. Sorry Steve, Sebastian had way more chops than you do, but, you do stand alone in my mind as the supreme master of atmospheric music. Your music has been an inspiration to for as…"

Tell us about yourself!
Former classical guitarist turned synth twiddler. I'm trying to move toward long-form ambient, but my experiments so far have been...instructive. Need to learn to be less heavy-handed; let the music write itself. Here are "Being Peace," my best work, and my latest outpouring. There is also a link to all of the music I've put online* below.
Being Peace by dannysandiego Thing 002 by dannysandiego
Thing 002 is my most recent "thing" and may be the best thing I've done since Being Peace. * Being Peace is also available on Free Floating Music's first release, "Conception"... http://freefloatingmusic.com/label/various-artists-conception/
This piece is very exciting to me (which I'm sure I'll get over) because it is the first piece that really feels like an ambient piece to me:

So many patches, so little mind

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 12:32am 0 Comments

I've been going through all of the patches on my Virus TI2 and using my web app to keep track of the ones I like. 200, so far, and I'm only through the "O's" in the Pad category. Phew! A lot of the patches are very idiosyncratic and/or distracting, but some of them are just amazing. Cremoma HS is my favorite so far. In fact, it inspired me to record something for the first time in months. Only 17 more categories to go. I don't expect I'll find as many that I like in the non-Pad categories,…

New Piece

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 6:54pm 6 Comments

I've just recorded what may be the most beautiful thing to have come out of my fingers and equipment, which I've called Thing 002. It's on my main page and at Soundcloud. It feels to me like it came directly from my sadness with little interference from my mind. I'm still too close to it to be objective - if I everamobjective - but I think it stands up OK. It's a little incoherent like my sadness, but after several…

Audio interface recommendations?

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 10:14pm 6 Comments

I'm going to be shopping for an audio interface and want recommendations. I've got 6 outputs on my Virus TI2 (eat your hearts out :-P), though I doubt I'll be using them all at the same time, but you never know (I don't). I have a MOTU MIDI Express XT, so I should be covered for MIDI, but I'm pretty clueless about audio interfaces. I won't have a lot to spend, but I don't want to buy trouble by going cheap. I do have one USB 3.0 port, but no Firewire. Any suggestions?

Is it weird...

Posted on July 26, 2011 at 3:36am 5 Comments

...that i listen to my own music more than that of anyone else's? OK, define "weird," I know, but I just don't feel like I have time or head space to seek out much more than what stillstream.com offers. I am always rewarded in some way by listening to that station and often learn something, such as when mike metlay's daughter performs during her Mystery Bubble shows. Such elegant simplicity (but don't tell her).

Anyway, how do you dj types spread your attention around so…

My apologies for taking so long to respond to your comments- I am just getting back around to almost 'normal' from a very nasty illness- the doctor put me on a course of Augmentin, and I put myself on a course of multi-vitamins I got from a health food store- anyway, to cut my 'rambling' short, I'll be on here a bit more often now that I'm getting better.  Cheers!

ah..so you went for soundcloud...i see you've posted your tracks on here, one of the cool features s/c has..it also links easy if you want to sell your tracks.

also..its one of the few sites that caters for wav files.so without the premium package

you are limited to how much time you use and not how big the files are..

I'm listening now, and thus far, 'Being Peace' is an excellent track.  I wouldn't be too discouraged about the lack of rave reviews- there are plenty of great ambient musicians who have 'gotten out of the way' and let the music 'write itself' and then suffered a lack of recognition.  Sometimes it takes the rest of society a while to catch up to where the visionaries have already been.

BTW, if your avatar is your picture, you bear a striking resemblance to a close friend of mine.

Peace
